Here is my opinion of the South Lyon Hotel...it's just good. I read the other reviews prior to writing this one and if you come here expecting the best meal you will ever have, don't come. What you will get is a good meal, served by a good waitstaff and have a good time. There seems to always be some type of entertainment. You could either sit downstairs and get a mellow 2 or 3 person band or you could go upstairs and get a loud DJ or rock band. There is a bar upstairs and down. Let's focus on a few menu items. The pizza is worth trying. Again, you will always get a good consistent pie. The burgers are also quite good. Try the Buffalo Burger. There are a few wraps on the menu that all are tasty and there also seems to be a wrap on the daily special menu. Portions are large so if you look at the menu and think it seems slightly high, you won't be disappointed with what you get. There are quite a few taps to choose from and they seem to have a very good selection of bottled beer. Summary - Good food, Good atmosphere, Good service...Good time.

This place is a dump. I have friends with kids that want cheap so ive had to come here a couple of times. One time i ordered nachos as a meal. They brought them out and said sorry we are out of salsa and sour cream. Huh? Maybe tell me before you bring them out. The guy next to us says that he got salsa with his he wont use. The waitress really had the nerve to ask if I wanted it. Disgusting. Other 2 times it has smelled like sewage and was freezing inside. This last time we sat and waited and waited while they sat larger parties that came in way after us ahead of us. When i inquired they said well the tables are already together from previous diners. These are square wood tables that they are too ignorant to pull apart? Food is well below average and they have 12 year olds doing most of the work. Never again.

Atmosphere and service have been great over the years. I've often referred to "The Hotel" as a family friendly sports bar, even though it is so much more than that! I recommend the pizza without hesitation. The large pepperoni is a great pie to nosh upon. The pie is served piping hot, with oozing cheese and and the right amount of spice and tang in the pizza sauce.

The South Lyon Hotel is an OK place that every one in South Lyon has been to at least once and many locals frequent on a regular basis. There is nothing special about the Hotel though and the bar is more nostalgic then anything else.

Good food most of the time. Breadsticks are a family fave -ask for them. They are free with dinner. Bands are decent. Dj upstairs keeps the party going. Staff usually friendly.

The prime rib was good, the carrots were too hard they need to cut them thinner so they will roast with the other veggies, baked potato was not cooked long enough, but once you mashed it up it was good. The band was terrible, it was nice when they took a break and put the music on. The waitress she tries hard but she had my husband drink made with diet coke, and it was bad, she never offered to take off the bill either. But all in all we will go back, normally the food is good and we just have to make sure we find out who the band is, no more painted white.

The South Lyon Hotel is one of the best places to eat in town, if not THE best. If it wasn't stuck in South Lyon it would be 3 1/2-4 stars, but in this decent restaurant desert, they're as good as it gets in terms of service, food and ambiance. They've got a good selection of dinners, including tasty pizza, decent burgers and some good salad and entree options. I've never had a bad meal here. Sometimes they have live music downstairs on the weekends, but it's not overpoweringly loud and usually it's pretty good quality. The best part about the Hotel is eating on the big porch outside in the summer time. Watch the townsfolk and the motorcycles drive by while you enjoy some good food.

I strongly dislike giving bad reviews and waited 24 hours to do this review to sleep on it but it needs to be done. I know there are people out there that work very hard for their money and want a nice dining experience... I first want to say that the gluten free pizza that I ordered with tomatoes and Italian sausage was EXCELLENT! Hats off to the Hotel for this pizza and crust! The service, however, was awful. My friend didn't get her rice and vegetables with her salmon (she had to ask). I had to ask twice for water and never got it (I finally went to the bar to get it). The waitress, Emily, suggested Heineken for a "low gluten" beer when I asked what they had that was gluten free (they have NO GF beers). She actually made some smarta** comment when I ordered Raspberry and Stoli, stating vodka "isn't gluten free" and had a smirk on her face. I attempted to educate her, as I am celiac, letting her know what is and isn't gluten free but she cut me off and walked away. PLEASE educate your staff! That waitress's attitude was not a good representation of the South Lyon Hotel that I have been going to for many years. There were three friends with me that are new to the area. Not good. I will return once I see more consistently improved reviews. Five stars for the pizza and two-man band playing Motown. Also, there were two very good waitresses that were super helpful - one took our picture and another got the vegetables for my friend. Both were very sweet with big smiles. We appreciated them.

Since back when I used to frequent The Hotel it seems to have turned from a marauders' bar into a nice family spot with live but quiet music being played on a Saturday night to a full dining room. Service was fantastic, from our server JJ to all the bussers grabbing plates or dropping off food to the table, I was impressed. We started with the fried pickles and a ranch type dipping sauce. The pickles were a little bland but the sauce had a nice kick to it. I'd order them again for the table. My girl had the Hotel burger which I thought was delicious. I had the sirloin which tasted OK but it looked like it had been "rode" up to the Hotel that night, and then carved up and grilled. It was a little too grisly for my liking but I should have went with the strip steak or the burger. Their sandwiches all sounded premier and the fries were solid. It's one of the only games in town and while it wasn't the best plate of food I've had, they have a good thing going on here. I'll be back to try more of the sammies. I haven't been upstairs in over a decade but they used to have a great pool and dart room....looking forward to checking into that.

Food was good but not the service. When I got my burger it had no toppings on it as requested. The server was very slow, and we had to ask for a box twice. He could see that my wife was struggling with putting the leftover pizza in the box but seemed to ignore us. Not usually one to complain about poor service but this was a little much.

Haven't been here for a while and I was pleasantly suprised. Sat outside on the porch. Beer prices are good and the draft beer selection is decent. Our pizza was really good and so was our service. I'm glad to see that the Hotel is stepping up their game. I'll be back.

I just read the reviews on this place and I was dying laughing at the reviewer that said their crab bisque is the best they've tasted since living near the ocean. Are you fucking serious? It's not even Crab, it's Krab... Guess they won't be making it to Hell's Kitchen this season. So, anyway, I went here with a couple of girlfriends and this is WAY out of my area. It's about an hour drive for me, so I was excited to have somewhere new to Yelp about. The bar has a downstairs and an upstairs. I've only been upstairs so I can only review that part. There was a Red Wings game about to end when we walked in so the place was pretty busy. We ordered our beers (Blue Moon pints 2.50 made me happy) I asked for my usual 2 oranges and only got 1. Oh well, such is life. I grabbed the menu and decided on the crab bisque and the shrimp quesedillas. She brought the bisque out, no napkin, no crackers.. ok Holy SHITBALLS!! This was not bisque, this was ummm. goo, muck, sludge, pudding maybe?? It stuck to my spoon. Even when I put the spoon in my mouth it stuck to the spoon. I was like "OMGOMGOMGOMG" And I tried to take another bite and that's when I noticed it. The bright red "crab" was peeling.. The layers were peeling. It's not crab, it's krab. So Crab Bisque = Krab Wallpaper paste AKA pollock, AKA fucking gross man. I think that if a restaurant is advertising that they have crab bisque, they should use actual crab. The waitress comes over. "That's really bad." I say, frowning. She SHRUGS her shoulders (no shit) and says, "So you want me to leave it here or take it away?" Wow, i'm sure her managers are super proud to have her there to represent them. She took it away and then some guy brought out the quesedilla. It was ok, shrimp and cheese. The sour cream and salsa it says it comes with in the menu was nowhere to be found. So, ok, dive bar, dive food. But for God's sake, people talk the place up like it should be an upscale place in freaking Birmingham!! I'm thinking maybe South Lyon and Hazel Park have alot more in common than I realized. We stayed and had some beers and they have a great balcony for smoking on, in you're into that sort of thing. DJ stays only til like 1 which is kinda weird, but I guess the choices out there are nil for bars so they stay busy. The food and the staff though, UGH and I would never eat there again. They wouldn't even take that shit off my bill. /Divey!

I can honestly say i will never go here again, my family went, we were seated upstair. We had a blonde waitress who spent half the night ignoring us my husband asked for another pop after we ordered and 30 mins later it was brought the food was messed up as it always is but we always look past it because my dad really likes the calzones, well just so everyone knows they made them smaller same price less food. So at 915 the dj starts blaring music which is fine we are done and waiting for our check i sit there for 20 mins waiting with an 8 year old we all finally get up and start looking for her and as we are standing there waiting some woman pulls out her tits and starts waving them at the guys at the table in front of us. Upset because we have a CHILD my mother asks to see the manager ten mins later no manager my moms starts walking through the resturant because no one will come back and we get emily the waitress who suddenly is the acting manager who wants me to go up there and confront the woman. no im not starting a fight with some woman, needless to say all emily could say is what would you like me to do? Seriously thats the kind of place you are? Will not be going there again.

Very Shocked! South Lyon Hotel has changed it's past menu!!! Since the new menu, I have had dinner their twice!! Both times, well... yes, very yummy!! They have added a new BBQ section to the menu, as well as other new item's! The pulled BBQ pork sandwich is very good, with 3 choice's of BBQ sauce to pick from. On Saturday night the Prime Rib special is.. Well, I didn't think I would give them this! But, (after, year's and year's of so-so food! And, Never have ever even seen those bread stick's I hear others talk about!!) But, yes the Saturday special prime rib is very tasty! They also do have a very tasty, horseradish sauce, that you must try!! So, believe it or not, Yes, I am willing to give it another shot!! As a side note, skip the baked potato! I don't think their micro-wave works!! It"s always under cooked! Go with the Garlic Mashed, very tasty. Pizza is always good. Server's are a 50/50 shot! Some are so wonderful, and others are, well... I think they are on line with friends in the back room! Next time we go, I will get you the name of the best server in the world!! As soon as I see her again, I will always request her section and share her name with you! So, as it goes this place is starting to really look up!

The coconut chicken salad is insanely good. The smothered salmon is awesome, actually the salmon is just background filler for the crab/scallop/shrimp cream sauce they pour over it. The crab bisque was the best I've had in a long time (since living near the ocean). Prices are reasonable and the live music was pretty good too! Can't wait to go back.

The food and service are good. It is family friendly and even more so since the Michigan smoking ban. Weekend evenings bring the crowds, average age is over 30. Of the bars in South Lyon, this one is probably the best.

I've probably been to the SL Hotel for dinner at least 30 times over the past 8 years and decided to write a review. I have really wanted to like this place because it is close to my home and it seems like a fixture of the local area. And at first, I was a big fan. Heck, I even rented the upstairs for a baby shower once. Why the 2-star then? Because this place has real consistency issues with both food and the service. Over the past some of the consistency issues we've had included the following: 1. Serving rotten lettuce in salads. It is not hard or costly to prevent this because that is by far the cheapest part of the salad. It just takes a little effort to actually look at what you're putting on the plate. This has happened on three different occasions to folks in my party (a different person each time). It seems to be especially a problem with the salads that are based upon mixed greens where the different leaf types "keep" for different amounts of time. Each time the person in my party sent it back and normally we aren't picky and we'll eat just about anything. 2. Undercooked pizza and calzones. They must not be following a standard cooking times or have a consistent oven because we have had perfectly cooked items and items that were literally raw dough on the inside. Once my wife and I showed the waitress by opening the calzone, removing the toppings and grabbing the dough inside the calzone to stretch it out for her. 3. The wait staff has been both superb on occasions and horrible depending upon who you get. And the odd thing is that this hasn't correlated to how busy they are. It really depends on who you get waiting on you I think. I really don't think these are issues with the waitstaff and cooks, but rather a serious lack of training and oversight by the management. Also, lack of enforcement of basic standards that you see at other restaurants seems to be a problem here. Now for the good/so-so part. I think the Chile has been consistently good over the years. The crab bisque I ordered once and would not do so again. Their wraps and sandwiches are run-of-the-mill so you won't be disappointed, but also not astounded. The fried chicken was pretty good the couple of times I've tried it. All in all, it almost breaks my heart to write this review because we've tried this place so many times and want to like it so badly, but I think I've finally given up...

I really don't know what to say about the South Lyon Hotel.... we went there for dinner and drinks. I can't say it was exceptional, I can't say it was average, I can't even say it was a disappointment. It just sort of was a non-event.... The drinks were tasty, the bar staff was friendly, the GoldenTee (arcade golf) was fun, the food was acceptable, but nothing about them stands out. So with that middle of the road blandness, I'll be nice and say 3 stars.

Today was a 2-star, but I'm showing an average of 3-stars based on my original rating. We were a group of 13, with reservation. After ordering, food didn't start coming out for over 45 minutes. And that was just the first batch (which didn't even include all the kids' meals!) It took another 10 minutes after that for the rest to arrive. And half the entrees were fish & chips or grilled cheese! I'll just lay it all out: Grilled Cheese: Bread tasted like it came out of a toaster, certainly not grilled. Fake cheese. My daughter had trouble even biting through the bread it was so crunchy. Fish & Chips: Meh. No seasoning, no lemon wedges to squeeze over, and the tartar sauce was literally the coleslaw with more mayo in it. And I don't have anything good to say about the coleslaw, either. Grilled Chicken Salad: Chicken was fine, but greens were wilted and turning slimy, like it had been in a bag in the fridge for far too long. Yuck. Fajita Wrap: OK, but still fake cheese. Onion Rings: Tasted like fish; I think they use the same fryer. Tsk tsk. Other meals were on the other side of the table, so I didn't get much feedback from those. Service was poor. After the orders were taken, we didn't see much of the waitress except for the occasional water refills. One of our party complained of the poor service, and the waitress ended up offering a small dessert for the kids -- we chose cake pops...they were disgusting. It tasted like raw cookie dough, and just should never be served to anyone. Well, at least they got the beer and wine straight. I wonder if they purposefully take an hour to serve your food so that they can keep milking you on drinks. I MIGHT try this place again, just because our baby shower was handled well. But that was 3 years ago, and my patience has grown thin after this night's experience. I'm not too keen on ever going back.

Oh, South Lyon Hotel. You are so hit or miss for me. Jackie the bartender downstairs is the best! I don't know the others but my drinks are well made by her every time. The food has kind of declined over the last few years. BRING BACK THE WAFFLE FRIES!!! Service is also very hit or miss, some of the waitresses are great, some are seriously lacking. But I feel like all of the busboys are great, if that counts for anything. They get club-y upstairs after dark, with a mostly older crowd and a old and new mix of music. Overall, it's a good little place for a good little town, but if you're looking for fancy dinner or night club, this place doesn't do either of those well.

We have lived here 10 years and the a hotel is finally growing on me. I love their pizza and trivia night is fun as well. Service has been really good lately. I will give it 5 stars once they offer more Michigan beer on tap.

This was my first time here. It definitely isn't the finest establishment, but if you love low key dive bars, this is a gem! I went here after bowling for a few drinks and they had some music and dancing. It was nice to sit and listen to all different genres of music and kick back and have a good ole PBR!

This place is our favorite full service bar in South Lyon. Food is usually very good - we typically order meals ranging from salads to burgers to calzones depending on our mood. Add flavored crust to the calzone for an extra amazing taste! The chili is also tasty if you just want a little something. Basically, the food is good/consistent and we come here for specific things that we feel they do well. I wouldn't come here for a special dinner or anything - but it is good for groups if you're looking for something casual. You really can't go wrong with drinks at the Hotel. There are always specials, pitchers, and this is a shots kinda place. But, most importantly, they know how to pour a black & blue properly! Yes, it's layered :) Our favorite server, Nikki, usually works on the second floor - she's attentive, friendly, and super sweet. She's probably one of the main reasons we go other than proximity of thr bar to our house! Entertainment from Jacovetti is great, he's got the latest songs and plays pretty much anything you request! Keep in mind, this is a small & former farm town, so there is a lot of country played. He also hosts Trivia on Thursday nights which is alot of fun. The main floor entertainment is also usually pretty good from what we hear passing through. I prefer upstairs for its openness & balcony.

Daughter there with her husband for St. Patrick's Day and ran up a tab. Found out a few days later that the server that had helped them took their credit card number and bought concerts tickets with it. Watch out for the waitstaff, they will rob you an think nothing of it. Total fraudulent charges= $400.00. Enter at you own risk.

This place has been around forever. It's what you would expect in a small town. You're not going to get 4-star food but it's OK depending on what you order. I've had the chicken which was juicy. Came with over steamed veggies I think they could definitely improve on. They have decent pizza to and the fish and chips are good as well. The wait staff isn't the best so plan to wait for drink refills. The place is welcoming with a large porch which is great to hang out on the with friends or family and have a drink or some food. They have a pretty large menu with a lot of choices.

This is BY FAR the BEST place to go for deep fried pickles! If you think you have already found the best DFP...try these!! There is usually a bit of a wait to get seated, but again...worth it! The fries are also delicious and very different!

I am happily surprised at my experience Friday night. I had been to the afternoon buck board in years past. They still offer this from 2 to 4 pm Monday thru Friday. It is small portions of a variety of entrees for $1. From memory, it was mini tacos, sliders, hot dogs, fries, etc. I believe they offer a beer too. Two or three entrees will fill you up. Such a deal. Friday night, we went for dinner. Marcia had the steak dinner and I had the salmon dinner. The salmon came with fresh vegetables and rice. It was quite tasty. I would have thought the better meal would be hamburgers in this type of establishment, but they did a nice job on the salmon and the steak. We were seated upstairs on the second floor. The entire hotel was quite busy, but very well organized and clean. The waitress was friendly and cheerful. We arrived about 7 PM and noticed several tables of families. As the night progressed, it filled up with adults and no children. Lots of TVs but they were not too loud and not too distracting. If you are sensitive to cigarette smoke, use the front door. People congregate at the back door on the porch and smoke right at the door. The hotel parking lot is small, so you may end up parking along the side street or in a lot down the street. It is a short walk though. There is a small bar on the main level and it is typically quite crowded. The bar on the second floor is expansive and nice. There is an area for a DJ and dance floor on the second floor. There is another area for entertainment on the main level too. On this particular Friday night, the card on the table said that Bobby Lewis, who I saw frequently as a 20-something, was performing with his daughter. When it was apparent he wasn't the entertainment, we asked about it, but nobody knew who the entertainment was nor when Bobby Lewis might be back. That was disappointing. There is outdoor seating both on the upper level and street level. It is winter as of this writing, so I asked about the outdoor seating and smoking for the spring. She said that there is some smoking allowed on the upper level outdoor seating. Again, if this is a concern, be aware come warmer weather. Overall, a good experience and I will return. If you're in the area, try it out for the afternoon buck board just for fun, or a good dinner in the evening. Be sure to read the history of the hotel too, but if you're afraid of ghosts . . . . (they say the place is haunted).

I come here quite often because it is a local place. The pizza is delicious so is the canzone. They make the spinach artichoke dip fresh on order and it's always good. I have only had one bad experience with service but usually the servers and bartenders are awesome and knowledgeable. Jackie makes yummy tequila shots!

Have to say that this "small town historic" eatery has been two strikes and one walk, for me. First experience was in the summer a couple of years ago, while treating myself to a dinner out. I walked in, and was ignored. Plenty of waitstaff, but not one of them approached me at all. A band was playing, so I went to the bar and asked the girl if she'd send over a waitress. Again, plenty of servers waiting on others, and completely ignored. As I was leaving, the hostess actually asked how my dinner was!! I do recall being snippy in my reply, at that point. Second time, a friend wanted to meet for lunch at the hotel. At the time there were only a couple of other full-on restaurants in town, and it was long enough since the first attempt that I was willing to give it a shot. Finally seeing the extensive menu, I settled on a simple sandwich. Passable. Had a cocktail, one that is impossible to screw up, and was glad that they had the outdoor seating. Walked away with a better impression, but still leery. Third experience? Yep, another case of hiring young and cute versus someone that gives good service. Ordered the patty melt with a side of onion rings. 3 onion rings for $3.00. Really? Was there gold dust in those three rings? Frankly, I've had better. The burger, ordered medium/well was bright pink in the middle, negating my appetite at that point. I could have slipped out on the bill, for all the attention the bar maid paid. Thankfully, there are more restaurants that have opened in this small town. Recommending only that those that like to be treated badly cross the historic threshold.

The food at the South Lyon hotel is generally quite good. I would recommend the garlic cheese bread which is basically a small cheese pizza with garlic. Their nachos are ok but they are made with flour tortilla chips like you'd find in a taco salad which become a bit too rich after awhile. Their sandwiches are always good and very large. One of the problems we've encountered is that if you sit in the non-smoking section, you are often seated next to the smoking area which is only separated by a glass divider that only goes half way to the ceiling. As such you are pretty much in the smoking section if heavy smokers are present. Also, there are generally a lot of families present with younger children so be prepared for a possibly loud environment. Overall still a very good eat.
